05.05.06 Workplace E-Collaboration
Today’s topic was workplace e-collaboration

Gartner says that by 2010, 70 percent of the population in developed nations will spend 10 times longer per day interacting with people in the electronic world…..that sounds a bit unexciting at the first go…..as if everybody is going to build their own world around them and u could talk to the only through some electronic device!!! No PERSONAL connections!!!

Per definition “E-Collaboration is the process of two or more (dis-located) people working together on a common purpose or goal where the participants are committed and inter-dependent and work in a common context using shared resources, supported by (web-based) electronic tools. ”
So in an organisation the purpose is more to inter-link and support people in their daily work so that they can work effectively and efficiently within and across the organisation.
Prof. Back showed us the importance of workplace e-collaboration by placing it in the St. Galler Business Engineering Model.

We will be focussing on the e-collaboration tools Teamrooms, Instant Messaging and Live Conferencing.

Teamrooms
This is a tool for information sharing and collaboration. By creating a shared context for teamwork, Teamroom creates leverage both for the individuals on the team and for the team as a whole. Because the technology is built on a group sharing platform, the context is richer and the leverage is greater than is typically possible by sending an e-mail or saving a file in a shared directory. Teamroom also support teams whose members are geographically distributed, and who are sometimes unable to access their computer network.
These are some well know Teamroom providers:
- Lotus Quickplace
- Teamspace.de der 5Point Ag
- Basecamp

All the groups were given access to their personal Teamrooms so that they we could get first hand experience by working on our assignments with this tool. I have never used one before so I was curious…We all logged on to our Teamrooms and personalized our identities…..Jing, Fabian and me will be using a service called Teamspace. I could put in my pic and fill in information such as address, telephone number, and so on…..then we have different services such as a pinboard for short messages, e-mail, sms, calendar, chat, milestones and so forth…..till now the tool has been really user friendly….but I have to admit that I haven’t used it much either!!!

Instant Messaging
This is a tool that enables you to create a kind of a private chat room with another individuals in order to communicate in real time over the Internet. It’s similar to a telephone conversation but using text-based communication. Typically, the instant messaging system alerts you whenever somebody on your private list is online.
These are some well known Instant Messaging providers:
- Skype
- ICQ
- Microsoft Live Communications Server

I do not use Skype too often anymore because Cablecom offers free telephone service in the evenings!!! But it is a really good service to talk to people in foreign destinations or to be actually able to see the people as your communicating with them. Even though instant messaging is a very practical tool I have the feeling that it could develop into a problem in case it starts constraining the privacy of the people using it. Prof. Back also mentioned that organisations still have a conservative approach towards this tool because the safety of the transferred data is not ensured yet.

Live-Conferencing
This tool is similar to a forum, an area in a bulletin board or online service in which participants can meet to discuss a topic of common interest.
These are some of the well known providers:
- Saba
- Microsoft Office Live Meeting
- IBM Lotus Sametime

Prof. Back demonstrated a stunning example. She presented a live management seminar to her students in St. Gallen from an institute in Orlando. The students could see and hear her teaching, watch the slides, give comments, discuss, etc.
So will we need our classrooms anymore??? Now that looks like the FUTURE!!!!

27.04.2006 Weblogs & Wikis
Prof. Back first gave a short introduction about what we will be doing today. She also showed us the databank where we could find all the information (documents, slides, assignments, etc.) that we need for this course. I was a bit astounded that we were going to use a LOTUS Databank since I have been using only the Studynet since I started studying in our university. But its actually quite similar to the Studynet and easy to handle.

Florian Heidecke then took over. We will be concentrating on Weblogs and Wikis today. The knowledge worker has to collect, combine and share the knowledge that he comes across in his daily work. The information- and communication- technologies can help him in these tasks and therby help him to increase his productivity.

Weblogs
A weblog is a web-based publication consisting primarily of individual periodic articles as in a diary. A blog often focuses on a particular subject, such as hobbies or politics. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. It give me the opportunity to share my views with others on a common internet platform and to get their feedback and opinions. So weblogs help a knowledge worker to link and share their knowledge.

In class we all got the chance to start our own blogs. I have never worked with blogs and was very excited actually. Welcome to Ligi’s world… It’s actually not so difficult even though I did have starting trouble. There are so many options as in I can write messages, put in pictures, change the skins and so forth and it’s all free.

And all my ther colleagues have their blogs on Prof. Back’s blog

Wikis
The Wiki Wiki Express In Hawaii gave the Wikis their exotic name. Wiki means quick or fast in Hawaiian. Tiill now I have only used the Wikipedia, but only to collect information. So once again it was a totally new experience.
Wikis can be a structural framework to collect, combine and share knowledge with in a specific team or for individual project. I have to try and use it for my bachelor thesis.

We developed our Wikis about different topics we will be looking at in the knowledge management lectures. I worked on Wikis in companies and actually did not find much on the web in the beginning. And even after I found something I was quite sceptical as to if it would be a good and useful link. This is the most astonishing factor of the Wikis for me. Anybody and everybody can write articles and CHANGE the contributions of others in the WIKIS. This can lead to manipulation BUT this is also the crucial strength of the WIKI. Compared to a traditional dictionary the Wikipedia for e.g. contains enormous information and there are also very individualistic contributions.

What I learnt today is that Weblogs and Wikis are ideal tools to not only collect, interlink and share knowledge. It's also an excellent tool to motivate and provide ideas to create new knowledge.

21.04.06
last semester i did the course knowledge mgmt with prof. dr. back and prof. dr. van krogh. it was such an interesting course and it inspired me to check out the knowledge mgmt tools!!!

prof. back first gave a small introduction to the course, showed the structure and how we would get our credits. then she showed us where we cn download all the materials we need for the class

knowledge mgmt tools are software, that support the performance of applications and activities such as knowledge generation, knowledge codification or knowledge transfer. we will be concentrating on weblogs, wikis, teamrooms and web conferencing. we will be also having a training session in e-moderation with lore ross.

then we had this chat session with the other participants in the class.....and fabian, jing and me were all bla bla bla....fabian is swiss (from central switzerland) and jing is chinese (form hunan)and we spontaneously decided to form a group....an exotic one.....and we decided to work on the topic Live Conferencing

prof. back then delivered an insight into the software tools for knowledge mgmt. the tools can be generally categorised as content, co-action, competence, or control tools. we also looked at the present technologies and the latest trends of this branch.

i am looking forward to learning how to use the knowledge mgmt tools so that i can also manage them in my daily work in the future.
